1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 With their ultra-sleek styling and wide array of available potent power plants, the 1969-1970 Ford Mustang fastbacks (or Sportsroofs in Ford jargon) are regarded as some of the most desirable of the earlier-generation Mustangs. Among them, the sporty Mach 1 versions are especially notable. In addition to its performance upgrades, the Mach 1 took the Sportsroofs sharp styling to another level with its ribbed aluminum rocker panels, tasteful hood graphics and upgraded interior with knitted vinyl upholstery, a handsome console, a Rim-Blow three-spoke steering wheel and convincing wood-tone accents. This particular 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 is even more remarkable in four very important ways: provenance, originality, condition and options. We acquired the car from the widow of the second owner, who purchased the car back in 1973. When her husband passed away in 1994 she did an incredible job of properly preserving his Mach 1. She even kept a diary on the car that included when she drove it as well as the fuel fill-up details. In addition to always being garaged and protected from the elements, the Mach 1 was started and briefly driven approximately once a month to ensure that the mechanical parts got lubricated and that the various powertrain seals and gaskets didnt dry up. The car was also taken to a local Ford dealer once a year and gone through, with fluid changes and other maintenance work done as needed. As a result, the 51,000 original miles car is a virtual time capsule example, looking and driving more like a very well kept four- rather than forty-eight year-old car. Closer inspection reveals an all-original body boasting excellent floors, underchassis, trunk and sheet metal. The original Medium Lime paint still looks great, and the interior is likewise extraordinary, with the original seats, dash, door panels, carpet and headliner all in fine condition. As if being a beautiful, low-mileage and well-kept two-owner Mach 1 isnt enough, this example also boasts an impressive spec sheet. All the right boxes are checked here: 351 Cleveland 4-barrel V8, 4-speed gearbox, 3.91 Traction-Lok rear end, power steering, power front disc brakes, shaker hood scoop and rear window slats. Even a set of old-school Cragar S/S wheels and whitewall tires, both dating to the 1970s, are fitted to the car. Of course, the original Mach 1 wheels are included with the sale, as is a Deluxe Marti report. Youve likely heard the expression Theyre only original once stated by classic car enthusiasts. This stunning 1970 Mach 1 survivor is not only original, but is a fastidiously maintained, low-mileage, desirably-optioned turn-key example.
