We found a .....
California survivor from a year between the energy crises - a 76 Toyota Corolla Deluxe Station Wagon (model E38), complete with surfboards and accessories. These Corollas were once ubiquitous across the US, especially on the West Coast. Once customers learned how reliable they were, they drove the wheels off of them, or turned them over to their children, who then drove the wheels off of them. Either way, it became rarer to find them as time went on. More than 40 years later, finding a Toyota this small is nearly impossible. Reliability and durability quickly became two hallmarks of the Japanese vehicles imported here. As part of its vanguard, Toyota brought an entire range of models - sedans, coupes, three-door liftback, a van and even station wagons. This example was made in January 1976 at Toyota City in Japan. Finished in white (code 23), the cars paint and trim are in good overall original condition while the body remains pretty dry condition and the engine bay is tidy. The Interstate battery appears new and the cargo area is in very good order. The cars chrome bumpers with rubber corner caps look great. This little hauler rolls on radials, size 175/70R13 at all four corners and each one is mounted a factory steel wheel that is vented. The wheels and tires are all in very good order. Under the hood is Toyotas 1.6L overhead valve four-cylinder engine (code 2T) linked to a three-speed automatic transmission (code A40). Inside, there is a tan, vinyl interior. The drivers seat has some blemishes it from use. Overall, the upholstery is in good, original order, as is the matching carpet. The headliner, however, looks very good and is also tan. A black, three-speed steering wheel faces the driver the instrument panel has a couple of cracks in the dashtop. It and the inner door panels are in good, original order. The center console, shift lever and a factory AM radio complete the interior and are all in satisfactory condition. Documentation includes original owners manual and three copies of Surfer Magazine - November 1976, May 1977 and September 1977. The Corolla E30/E50 was the third generation of Corolla. It was built from August 1974 to July 1981 and marked Toyota's greatest growth in the United States in the wake of the fuel crisis. Competition to this Toyota in 1976 included Chevrolets Vega, Datsuns B210, Dodges Colt, Fords Pinto, Hondas Civic, Mercurys Bobcat and Pontiacs Astre.
